Great Maskwa Auction & Seeking Caterer

What a great Maskwa Auction on Saturday at Brewsters in Bedford. I judged over 50 people showed up to help support the fundraising initiatives for the high performance paddlers heading off to Florida for spring training. Over $5,700 was raised for the families attempting to raise money for their athletes. This would not be possible without the generous support of the Maskwa community at large, including the local HRM councillors who showed up to enjoy the afternoon with us. And, a huge thanks to all the parents, councillors, MLAs and businesses/organizations for their generous donation of supplies and goods for the auction.

This is a warning that with the freezing rain the driveway coming into the club is very icy and bumpy and the walkway around the deck into the gym is also icy. Please drive slow and walk carefully.

Today, I finally finished filling out the on-line application for federal summer jobs. This gets me excited because I love the thought of being able to hire youth and it gets my mind thinking of the upcoming summer. I’m officially counting the months now.

I wanted to also mention that Maskwa is in the process of securing a Caterer for the 2012 season. An ad was placed in The Chronicle-Herald on Saturday and it’s also listed on Kijji. I’ve included the specs below in case member of the Maskwa community might know of someone best suited for our club. Thanks everyone.

Located just off picturesque Kearney Lake in Halifax, Maskwa Aquatic Club is a paddling and swimming club which has over 800 members using the facility from July1st to the end of August. During the off-season from September to June the facility is used daily for Crossfit training and nightly for Judo. Maskwa is currently looking to secure a full-time caterer wishing to use the kitchen on a yearly basis who would also manage the summer canteen at the club.

Young Maskwa Paddler, Jakob Conrad Raises Money for The Gambia

I wanted to share this story about one of Maskwa's own paddlers.

Jakob Conrad is 10 years old and already thinking about ways that he can make a difference. For the second year in a row, Jakob’s Twoonies from Toubabs fundraising campaign will help fund lifesaving education and health initiatives in The Gambia. The campaign sells original

Valentine’s Day cards and all proceeds are donated to Nova Scotia-Gambia Association. “I learned that people there [in The Gambia, West Africa], have so little, but are so happy. And here we have so much, but always want more.” says Jakob, a Halifax native.

Twoonies For Toubabs started last year, when Jakob expressed his interest to visit the small West African country. His mother, Cathy Conrad, Acting Executive Director for NSGA at the time, knew that Jakob would come away from the experience with an enriched perspective on life. Twoonies from Toubabs was Jakob’s way of giving back.

‘Toubab” is a Gambian term for foreigners, and Jakob coined the name by himself. He started his campaign by selling Valentine’s Day cards and raised almost $3000.00 for the NSGA in 2011.

Jakob’s passion to raise money for health and education in The Gambia continues this year. Twoonies from Toubabs features six new Valentine’s Day cards at a cost of $2 each or 6 for $10. His goal is to raise $2000.00. Minuteman Press Halifax has generously donated the printing cost for all Valentine’s cards for the second year in row.

“The NSGA sincerely appreciates Jakob’s generosity. This money has gone such a long way to enhancing the education of so many youth across the country. I am so impressed that someone so young has such a big heart.” says Muhammed Ngallan, Executive Director of NSGA.

Register Today For Marathon Skating at Hfx Oval

Marathon Skating International, the Halifax Regional Speed Skating Club, and the Halifax Regional Municipality are pleased to announce the return of the “Skate the Common” Marathon on February 18-19, 2012 at the Emera Oval on the Halifax Common. More 5K and 10K options, a 25K, and new this year, a triathlon and sledge racing!

The speed skating competition will be sanctioned by Speed Skate Nova Scotia, and the triathlon by Triathlon Nova Scotia. The 25K event will be included in the Marathon Skating International Points Series, with points accumulated by skaters counting towards their season standing for purposes of the Pierre Gagné Trophy.

Chip timing provided by MSI Sports Timing for the events on the oval.

5K Big Ice Icebreaker Race 1 – skaters under 20
5K Big Ice Icebreaker Race 2 – skaters 20 and over
This event was so popular last year that we’ve had to divide it into two races. Registration will be capped at 60 skaters for each race. This introductory level event will appeal to skaters of all ages, with any type of skates. If you’ve been skating at the public skates at your local arena, you can do this distance – 12½ laps of the oval.

10K Hockey / Speed Skate Challenge Race 1 – skaters under 20
10K Hockey / Speed Skate Challenge Race 2 – skaters 20 and over
Hockey, ringette, figure and recreational skaters – are you known for your skating skills? Do you think you can go the distance? Take on the speed skaters in this 10 kilometre event – 25 laps of the oval! This event has also been divided into two races, with registration capped at 60 skaters for each race.

25K Big Ice Challenge
For the really serious skater, this one has 62½ laps of the oval, and is
a good test of your endurance and skating skills. Registration will be
capped at 70 skaters.

Tri-the-Oval Winter Triathlon
New this year! Individual or team triathlon – 5K Skate, 6K Bike, 4.2K Run on the Emera Oval and the Halifax Common. Details are available at this link. Registration will be capped at 80 participants.

3K Top Blade Sledge Race
New this year! For the sledge hockey players out there, come and

Racing Rules - Marathon races: Slowest skaters will skate on the inside track of the oval, with all passing done on the outside. Helmets are required for skaters 12 and under, and are recommended for all skaters.

Triathlon:
SKATE: Helmets are mandatory. Helmets must be approved for multi-impacts and without ventilation holes (to protect from blades). Ski/snowboard helmet or hockey helmet are perfect. Bike helmets won't be accepted (we have a few extra helmets for those who don't have one). All types of skates accepted (figure skating, hockey, and speed skating). Slower skaters will skate on the inside of the Oval, faster skaters on the outside (marathon speed skating rule).
BIKE: Bike helmet mandatory (everyone will have to change helmets, as each protects in a different way). Mountain bikes only (no cyclocross bikes). Drafting allowed, passing on the left only, studded tires allowed. Bike tires have to be larger than 40 mm or 1.5 inch.
RUN: Studded/yaktrax-like, trail & regular running shoes allowed (but not track shoes), no snowshoes, no barefoot running, but 5-fingers accepted.

Area Close to Maskwa Up for Development

Cresco Holdings Limited is seeking approval of a development agreement pertaining to Sub Area 9 of the Bedford West Master Plan Area; a component of the Bedford West Secondary Planning Strategy (SPS). In 2006, Regional Council selected the Bedford West area to be one of the main urban growth areas in the Municipality for the next 25 years. The lands, illustrated on Map 1, encompass 38.4 acres (15.54 hectares) to the west of Highway 102, northeast of Kearney Lake Road and south and southeast of the new Highway 102 interchange at Larry Uteck Boulevard.

The development proposal integrates parks and open space with multi-unit dwellings as well as general commercial land uses. The proposed development agreement (Attachment A) reflects this mix of uses and includes terms pertaining to environmental protection, land development, parks and open space, the provision of municipal services and phasing. Further, the agreement is subject to capital cost contribution charges by the developer to the Municipality for transportation improvements and in the future, to Halifax Water for sewer and water improvements.

The joint public hearing will be held by North West Community Council and Chebucto Community Council on Monday, Jan 9, 2012 at 7pm at Keshen Goodman Library, 330 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. All oral and written submissions will be considered at that time.

Proposal

A mixture of multiple unit dwellings, general commercial, parkland and other open space uses are proposed. Plans illustrating key elements of the project such as municipal services, park dedications, trails and development phasing are found in Schedules B to Q of the development agreement (Attachment A).

The development is comprised of two key components: a general commercial area and two medium to high density residential areas:

General Commercial

Approximately 17.8 acres (7.2 ha) of the development is intended for general commercial purposes and will house a mix of highway and general commercial land uses. This is intended to house land uses that are more car oriented than in other commercial areas of Bedford West. Commercial land uses are permitted to a height of 50 ft (15.24m) and a maximum lot coverage of fifty percent.

Residential

The remaining lands which can be developed , which cover approximately 12.48 acres (5.05 ha), are intended to accommodate medium to high density residential development. The concept submitted is proposing approximately 324 dwelling units in three buildings. One building is proposed at six storeys, while the other two are proposed at twelve storeys.

Parkland and Open Space

Approximately 2.67 acres (1.08 ha) of the site is reserved specifically for parkland and another 5.7 acres (2.3 ha) is set aside as a conservation area. In addition to the land dedication, the developer is proposing the construction of a trail of approximately 728 feet (222 metres) in length to form a future connection to Sub Area 10 from the General Commercial area of Sub area.

Maskwa Christmas Wreaths Now on Sale!

Maskwa Holiday Wreath Fundraiser

Fundraisers are always a great way to meet people, improve your sales skills and
ultimately raise money for the organization in which you belong. Prior to 2005, Lorrie and George Dickie organized this wonderful fundraiser for many years for our club. Elaine Moore took over the initiative in 2005, increasing sales to 225 wreaths before passing the baton to Maskwa board member Cheryl Kane in 2009. Last year, to the disappointment of many of our loyal customers, Maskwa did not participate in the holiday wreath fundraiser. So, in the interest in continuing on with this endeavor, it was decided that the fundraiser could be coordinated for 2011 by the Florida Training Fundraising Committee, with proceeds going to offset the cost of the spring training camp for Maskwa athletes.

Let me tell you a little about the project. Our wreaths are made locally by a supplier with a small operation in New Ross, NS. We have some very good established customers who buy a wreath from us every year. These buyers realize the quality and like to support our club as we are a non-profit organization. Some of these customers are relatives, friends, past presidents, past members and even friends of theirs. I am always surprised that people look for their Maskwa wreath in early December. This is a tradition and one we don’t want to lose.

I want to thank all of you now who bought wreaths, promoted wreaths and helped out in any way. We want this to be another great year and we want all members to support us.

The wreaths are $17 without a bow and $20 with a bow. These beautiful bows come in
red, burgundy, or ivory. Our 16” wreath is the most popular size which just covers your front door nicely. The deadline for wreath orders is Tuesday, November 28th. The
wreaths can be picked up from 9 AM to 12 NOON on Sunday, December 4th.

Search and Rescue at Maskwa this coming weekend

Okay a huge shout out to Alexa Irvin for winning gold at the Pan Am Games. My kids saw the huge picture in The Chronicle Herald and were so excited and that just made my day. Alexa was part of the women's K-4 team that won a gold.

Well talk about rain! Lots of it. Honestly I can’t tell if the wind is dying down now or getting ready to roar again. To off set this nasty day I’m putting up this lovely picture that Chad Brooks, Head Paddling Coach took of Alexa Irvine. It is beautiful.

Part-time is $70 + tax/per month and full-time is $113+ tax/per month – a reminder tax is only applied if your child is 14 years of age or older. Invitation for 2-hr Hike Around Trails at Kearney Lake

On Friday, October 7, 2011 at 1 o'clock (rain date October 14) join The Halifax West Trails Association for a two hour hike featuring the trails at Kearney Lake, a hike with challenging terrain. We will hike the trail to Charlie's Lake Loop, enjoy the Charlie’s Lake Lookoff and climb to Paddler's Ridge with the reward of seeing Charlie's and Kearney Lakes at your feet from the top. At the edge of Paddler's Ridge, Bob McDonald, chair of the Halifax North West Trails Association, will talk about the watershed area Charlie's and Kearney Lake are part of and talk about HRM's promise of a Regional Park. On the way back to the parking lot, we will complete the Popcorn Island Loop that feature the beauty of Kearney Lake and its woodlands.
Kearney Lake is the home of Maskwa Aquatic Club and the lake is in active use about 10 months of the year by Paddlers from the Club. For more information regarding Maskwa Aquatic Club, go to www.maskwa.ca. Hikers often see National and Canadian champions training on Kearney Lake.

In the spring, hikers enjoy the many wildflowers in bloom, lady slippers, mayflowers, trilliums, pitcher plants and native orchids. In the summer many hikers cool off in the waters of either Lake. In the fall the leaves changing color come to life from the top of Paddler's Ridge. In the winter Maskwa’s Loop and Popcorn Island Loop trails continue to be well traveled and hikers enjoy packed snow to hike on.

Please bring water, food ,sturdy foot wear and be prepared for the steep terrain and uneven ground of these trails.

HRM is required to make the final submission on polling district boundaries to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. The Board will also hold public hearings before making the final decision on the polling district boundaries (not the number of districts - that has already been determined with the decision of the NSUARB).
HRM is holding a number of public information meetings to review the proposed polling district boundaries and receive feedback from the public before making the final submission to the NSUARB.

The 2011-12 Podium Performance Series is about to begin for another year. The fall sessions will focus on helping coaches hone their skills for securing grant and sponsorship funding for themselves, athletes and athletic programs.

The first session of the series will take place on October 5th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Canada Games Centre (across from Lifemark Health Centre).Blaise Landry will facilitate this session on learning how to write high quality grant requests. Specifically, Blaise will focus on strategies for selecting appropriate grants for your needs, strategies for getting all the information that you need before you decide to write a grant request, creating budgets and basic dos and don’ts of grant requests. Blaise will share some completed grants for review and discussion.

Blaise Landry has been a Sport Consultant with the Province of Nova Scotia for 26+ years. Prior to that,he served as Executive Director for Wrestling Nova Scotia and Softball Nova Scotia. Blaise has a Bachelor of PhysicalEducation and an MA in Leisure Studies from Dalhousie University. He has been involved in grant assessments and reviews for a number of different programs in the province.

What a ride! Homeward-bound drama aside (Irene played havoc with some of our travel routes coming back from Welland through New York and Vermont), we had a fantastic showing at Nationals, with many of our more-than 40 Maskwa athletes going head to head with the very best in the country. Maskwa crews made more than 30 finals and of those who made finals, 18 placed in the top five! That's the top five in Canada! Here, in no particular order, are our top finishers:

Congratulations to all of our athletes and to their coaches (Head Coach Chad, Jordan and Pam), whose hard work and dedication has paid off big-time. Some of the athletes have been training twice a day, year round, often in harsh weather, so it's great to see them reap the reward for their efforts.

Congratulations also to Maskwa's Masters paddlers who took part in the CANMAS regatta immediately following the Nationals. The Masters paddlers did Maskwa proud in what was a windy day of competition on the Welland canal.

Maskwa set a goal this year to join the ranks of the top 10 clubs in the country and we succeeded - coming 10th out of 42 teams competing! And the terrific results didn't end there. Maskwa's Midget men came second place in overall points and our Junior women came third overall. The work and dedication of all the athletes, their coaches and all the parents is to be heartily commended.

Given that this was the largest Maskwa contingent we've ever sent to Nationals, you will all agree that it was a huge undertaking to coordinate and for that we owe Mike Haley, our Nationals Coordinator, an enormous bouquet. Bet you didn't realize it would be a full-time job when you signed up, Mike! In fact, without Mike and his smooth-talking skills, we would never have been able to field the Midget and Juvi war canoes, never mind kept things running as smoothly as they did. Special thanks as well to Janet Steele who stepped up to organize the fundraising campaign which covered a significant portion of the club's fees for boat transport, coaching and other club costs. Kudos also to our many parent-chaperones/drivers/meal-makers, who ensured that the athletes made it safely to and from the course and had plenty of fluids and snacks. Wendy Haley, Carol Coutts, Anne Webster, Janet Steele, Sally Campbell, Jackie Hoar and Margaret MacDonell did a fabulous job of looking after the team.

And finally, a shout-out (literally!) to our Maskwa cheering section, featuring the dulcet tones of Wendy (Go-Maskwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) Haley and her side-kicks Mike, Blair and myself. Let's just say that if the national paddling community didn't know Maskwa before, they sure know who we are now!

Very quiet day at Maskwa. It’s hot and sunny so I’m hoping more people will show up around lunchtime to take a swim. Thanks so much to Derek Bellemore who came early to help bail out the dragon boat for the recreational day campers. The lake was calm enough for the children to go out in the dragon boat this morning and they are enjoying the small yellow boats this afternoon. It's beautiful here this afternoon - where is everyone?????

Now it’s time to brag about Nationals:
Maskwa did a number of first. Jacob Steele and Robin Kendall got a gold in the Midget Men K2, which is a first as they are both bantams. And, a new Canadian Record was set in the Junior Women’s K-4 500m when Ciara Jerrett, Jillian Steele, Natalie Miller and Alexa Irvin won gold. Now, that’s girl power!

High Performance Paddling:
HP paddling starts this Wednesday at 4:30pm-6pm. I’ve had lots of emails about this and want to stress the following.
1. Anyone can join HP paddling – even if you didn’t do it in the summer and want to try it for a month then please sign up.
2. You must register and pay before you can start.
3. Fall Paddling runs all year and goes every day after school (you can pick which days work best for you if you are doing part-time) from 4:30pm-6pm and Saturday from 9am-10:30am.
4. Part-time is 3 days or less a week including Saturday and it’s $70 + tax
5. Full-time is more than 3 days and it’s $113 + tax
6. Keep in mind once you register it’s non refundable.
7. In terms of what you should bring: usual paddling gear and sneakers as they will be doing runs and workouts on rainy days. Once winter starts the coaches will be specific about what to bring and let paddlers know when those early morning swims will start.

Maskwa Takes Bonze at Nationals in Men's K-4 1000m & updates

It started out raining, but now the sun is shining. Lots of paddlers are enjoying their last day on the lake. Today at 3pm we’re doing a final movie afternoon and it’s the first Harry Pottery movie.

Today is the last Maskwa BBQ and the canteen’s last day also. I have received many inquiries about next week and wanted to clarify a few things.

1. Today is the last day for all paddling/swimming/kiddie kayak lessons

2. Last day for Canteen is today - it will be closed all next week

3. Adventure Recreational Day Camp is open all next week from 9am-4pm as scheduled and paddling will be from 11am-12:30pm and then again from 1pm-2:30pm.

4. The club, meaning Heritage Hall, will be open from 9am-5pm.

5. Lifeguards are on duty starting Saturday until Labour day from 12noon-5pm.

6. High Performance Training for all paddlers interested (meaning any Atom, Peewee, Bantam & Midget paddlers) starts Wed., Aug 31 from 4:30pm-6pm. If interested please come to the office so your payment can be processed and you can be added to the HP list.

HRM Seeks Input into Proposed Changes to Districts

Dear Residents;

As you may have heard, a recent NS UARB decision to reduce number of districts from 23 to 16 plus mayor has significant implications, one of which is need to redraw existing district boundaries.

That process is currently underway. Staff have prepared two possible scenarios for the proposed 16 district boundaries.
These may change, be tweeked, or redrawn based on citizens' input in a varied number of ways!

While our greater community - esp existing District 16 Rockingham Wentworth and District 21 Bedford, has and will continue to experience significant growth for a number of years ahead, under the HRM proposed two scenarios my existing district will see just as significant boundary changes which will be implemented in time for October 2012 municipal election. (the snowball effect from other district boundary changes).

Public input will be in a number of ways.

Also, since the original information link on District Boundary Review proposed 2 scenarios was posted on HRM website www.halifax.ca Additional maps and info have been posted.

It is important to hear from you on the proposed scenarios, fill out the survey and provide any additional comments/feedback. Please feel free to contact me and send me your thoughts and Clerks office

HRM Seeks Input on Proposed Changes to Polling Districts

(Monday, August 22, 2011) - On July 27th 2011, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review board (NSUARB) announced its decision to reduce the number of districts and Councillors from 23 to 16 plus the Mayor for the Municipal election in 2012. The decision requires HRM to submit a recommendation on the proposed boundary changes for review by the Board. HRM would like to hear from the public prior to making its recommendation. As a first step in consultation, an online survey, presenting options for boundary changes and seeking residents feedback is now available on HRMs website at: www.halifax.ca/boundaryreview.

We want to hear from as many residents as possible, says Chief Administrative Officer Richard Butts. The feedback we receive will help us determine appropriate boundaries for 16 polling districts that will provide equitable representation at the Council table.

Final boundary decisions will be made based on public feedback and in keeping with the legislative requirements set out by the NSUARB such as:

The number of voters in each district
That the number of voters in each district is about the same (+ or - 10%)
In certain cases the NSUARB allows for voter variance to be up to 25%

Communities of interest
Whether it is primarily an urban, suburban or rural district
The geographic size of the district.

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board will be holding public hearings on the proposed district boundaries. The dates for the Utility Board hearings have been set for early November.

A quick update to let everyone know that we raised $179 for our National Paddlers from our Jockey Clothing fundraiser. A special thanks to Lori Rafuse, Comfort Specialist, for donating 25% of her sales revenue to this fundraiser. Every little bit helps!

We are hoping to have the orders within two weeks and I will let everyone know they can be picked up at the club. Thanks again for your support ladies!

Hot at Maskwa Today

It's a hot sunny day here at Maskwa. Today Jennifer Spalding, who runs the Maskwa Canteen is prepping for the final cooking class for children. It's a take home Maskwa Picnic - the children will learn how to prepare 2 different types of salads, and wraps to feed a family of 5 all for $20. I, of course, signed up my daughter so I get to cross cooking off my list for supper tonight.

I wanted to highlight a few things:
This week is the last week of paddling/swimming/Kiddie Kayak lessons at Maskwa.

All week it's Open Dock at Maskwa and the children will also be doing a hike today, scavenger hunt tomorrow and on Friday we're planning a special Movie Afternoon inside Heritage Hall - this is a free event.

The Adventure Recreational Day Camp ends on September 2, 2011

Lifeguards next week are only on duty from 12noon-5pm.

In early September I will be emailing a survey to all members looking for feedback.

The end of year Maskwa banquet is scheduled for Sunday, September 18 from 2pm-5pm at the club and this year we're going to have a BBQ. More details including pricing etc and how the awards ceremony will go this year will follow soon.

Coyote Spotted Hemlock

Last night (Sunday) Aug 22 approx 11:30 pm, a Castle Hill resident reported seeing a coyote wandering around the property of 8 Castle Hill Dr.

The motorist and resident stopped to observe the coyote's activities.
The animal appeared very curious, and is approx 25-30 lbs.

The coyote then wandered through the back yard in the direction of Hemlock Ravine Park.

Details of the coyote sighting has been reported by the resident to the NS Dept of Natural Resources.
And this afternoon I spoke with an official at the DNR Waverley District office.

They have not yet confirmed it was a coyote. However there have been other coyote sightings this past year in the Princes Lodge/Hemlock Ravine Park area

Hi everyone:
I just wanted to send out a big congrats and thanks to the atom boys group. All summer these boys ran, paddled and swam harder and more than most. Their hard work payed off at the Atlantic Atom championships. Out of 39 races, 32 were top 3 finishes, of which 20 were 1st place finishes!!!! Amazing results!

I have coached at the atom level many times, and have never had the experience I have had this summer!

Thank you as well to all the parents who are always so willing to help, setting up the movie, loading (and unloading) boats, or helping to keep me on schedule, always appreciated.

Thanks also to Brian and Matt for allowing me to be involved. It was a lot of fun to work with you!

Hope to see everyone at the year end party and once again, you should be so proud of yourselves, you really accomplished a lot this summer!

Hi everyone:
I am so excited that Maskwa is hosting its first Jockey clothing line geared for active women. Lori Rafuse is graciously donating 25% of total sales to our National paddlers. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday is Peewee/Bantam champs at Lake Banook in Dartmouth and on Sunday it’s Atom champs at Orenda in Lake Echo. These events usually last all day so be prepared with food and water even though most paddling clubs will have canteen facilities it’s always good to have food on hand, or in my case as an adult a large thermos of coffee.

Well let me just say we had tons of FUN today at Maskwa! It was drizzly this morning but by 11am the sun came out. We started out with about 70 children but by noon that number had moved up to close to 150. I think the smell of Boston Pizza really motivated them to pop up to the club. A huge thanks to Boston Pizza for bringing Lionel the bear and the pizza that fed the hungry crew. Well it's almost 4pm and we're still cleaning up from the pie toss which raised $63 for our National Paddlers! At 4pm it's the PG-rated movie, Race to Witch Mountain and the teens are really looking forward to the Scary movie (Paranormal Activity) which starts at 7pm. Again all events are free but food/drinks can be purchased from the canteen. See below the Maskwa Fun Gallery of photos I took today - the children really all enjoyed themselves.

The Nova Scotia Department of Environment through the non-profit organization Clean Nova Scotia provides free, and confidential Environmental Home Assessments in your riding area. All Nova Scotia homeowners who have a well and septic system at their residence are eligible for the assessment. We would like to ask you to let your constituents know about this free service. The purpose of the program is to provide home owners with information on how to manage their septic systems, how to test and protect the water from their wells and how to prevent oil spills on their properties. As an incentive for home owners with septic systems and wells to participate, there is a $100 rebate on their next pumping of their septic
system as well as some other free items, and for those who qualify there is a grant of up to $3,000 to upgrade their septic system. The details of this program and contact information are contained in the attached press release. If you are meeting with your constituents who are rural home owners please let them know about this program.

Judo Demonstration Today in Gym

Hi all – Today starting at 11:30am is a special Judo demonstration. The Judo demo will be about 20-30 mins in length and the Judokas will demonstrate various throwing techniques, ground fighting utilizing armlocks, strangulations and hold downs. We will also add some realistic self defense aspects of Judo as well. Alex Scott and Liam Goulding will do most of the demos. Closer to the end of August they will be holding registration.

Maskwa Stole the Show at Junior Lifeguard Competition

The weather outside is frightful but the programs at Maskwa are delightful! Honestly the rain does not deter the children and all programs are on. I am looking closely at the weather for the rest of the week but I’ve learned that if I wait five minutes the weather will change so I’m hopeful that on Thursday the weather will clear and we will have a great Maskwa Fun Day.

I wanted to give everyone a quick update on a few things. Maskwa did great at the Junior Lifeguard Competition held on Saturday at Riser’s Beach, located just outside Bridgewater. This was my first time at this competition with my children and talk about a great time. Of course, the sun and heat certainly added to our fun. We had a number of Maskwa children participate: Erin and Jacob Davis, Nolan Field, Rileigh and Morgan Pugh-Toole and talk about one dynamic team. I think all together the Maskwa team must have taken home at least 20 first place ribbons. I sincerely hope that next year we get to host a mini-lifeguard competition at Maskwa. Lifeguard skills are something we should be working to develop and I was disappointed to discover that Maskwa was the only club from the Halifax area participating at the Junior Lifeguard Competition – which was extremely well organized. Special thanks to Laura Zevenhuizen, Maskwa's own lifeguard and instructor for keeping the Maskwa team pumped and ready to compete!

Once I touch base with Chad Brooks, our Head Paddling Coach, I will give an update on how our Maskwa paddlers made out during qualifying for Nationals. I know my son, Nelson a first year Bantam did the 6000 meter race competing with Midget boys on Friday afternoon and even he will admit that he was terrified. We were extremely pleased he finished the race and while at first terrified at the end he said he loved it and would do it again.

Also a reminder that the NS Lifeguard Society will be doing an Open Swim of 1km, 2km and 5km this coming Thursday, August 11 starting at 6:30pm with about 40-50 participants starting at Kearney Lake Beach and going directly by Maskwa. This is to remind all boaters and paddlers in the area to pay attention to people in the water on Thursday evening.

Lights are Working at Kearney Lake

Well it turns out we were wrong and in a good way. The lights are back on at Kearney Lake and working fine. Thanks again for all the help from our councillor Debbie Hum and the Department of Transportation for fixing this quickly.

Kearney Lake Lights Won't Be Working Until Monday

According to Department of Transportation officials the traffic lights' control panel was struck by lightning and "fried". A new panel which won't get here until Monday at the earliest.

So these lights won't be working properly till later Monday or Tuesday.

The flashing yellow on Kearney Lake Road (KLR) and flashing red on the off ramps means under MV regulations, KLR has priority for motorists and those motorists trying to come off the ramps have to yield to a break in traffic on KLR.

Hence the backup of traffic on the ramps.

Our local Councillor Debbie Hum (major thanks Debbie) is attempting to get the Department of the Transportation to provide some traffic control police during peak times to help alleviate the build up on the on and off ramps.

With the sun finally shining this week we will have for the first time the Sackville Boys and Girls Club at our club using the dragon boat from 2-3pm and then enjoying our swim area from 3-4pm. They are very excited with this opportunity and I'm thrilled the sun has come out for them.

Maskwa Flooded

Talk about one wicked rain storm last night. I'm sad to report that with all that rain it has washed away our beach and created large trenches. I've got our Custodian working on filling in those large pot holes but only once the water recedes will the beach show again. My past experience with this is it usually takes a couple of days so if the weather is good over the weekend, I'm optimistic the beach will show again by Monday. We are still open for business as usual. All swimming, paddling and Kiddie Kayak lessons are on as well as day camp.

With the weather not being great and the number of Maskwa people lower than normal for this time of year, Sweet and Savory Catering Limited who run our canteen will be closing early on some days. We will always give 30minute warning when the canteen will close and try for at least 1hr ahead so those children wishing to purchase something might have that opportunity.

Little Italy Today and Discounted Yoga Classes for Members

Well the weather this week is not looking great but we will paddle until the thunder hits today which will be around 12noon. All swimming lessons are currently on as is Kiddie Kayak.

Today is our Little Italy day - for $25 your child from 1pm-3pm will learn how to make lasagna with meat sauce, Caesar salad and garlic bread fingers. The best part about it is that it will feed a family of 4/5.

We had 8 people join our cooking class today and by the looks of the pictures they had lots of fun.

I also had to share a few pictures from the day camp. Today they are working on their paper mache craft and having lots of fun. The weather has held off and I honestly the sun has started to shine - way to go sun!

One of our long time members has recently opened a yoga studio in Rockingham Ridge Plaza. Many Maskwa members will remember Kathryn offering yoga classes last summer. Kathryn never charged for her time and we used the money raised from her classes to help fund the new playground equipment. She has kindly offered a discount for all Maskwa members. Here is what Kathryn has to say to our members:

Pancake Brunch Huge Success

The weather this week hasn’t been great but that has not stopped us Maskwa members from having lots of fun. Today was our Pancake Brunch, which was a fundraiser for Nationals and we raised $270 for Nationals. Way to go everyone! And special thanks again to Jennifer Spalding for donating her time to this fundraiser.

I wanted to let the Maskwa community know that we still have lots of spots in Kiddie Kayak for next week and the Adventure Recreational Day Camp. We are open on Monday and there will be swimming lessons but no paddling for all groups including the high performance, except the special midget war canoe practice.

Atom Triathlon Huge Success & Pancake Brunch Tomorrow

Well the first Maskwa Atom Triathlon was a huge success. The Atom boys ran, paddled and swam. They started at 10am and finished around 12noon. Special thanks to LA Dempster for organizing this and Atom coaches Nathan Mackinnon and Chris Haley for all their help. Pictured with the group are the two coaches in the back. The children especially enjoyed their treat bags as their rewards. We are hoping to do a 2nd Triathlon with the Atoms later in August. We also have planned a special Atom paddlers afternoon movie for them inside Heritage Hall.

I had to take a few pictures of my day campers - today they are making paper Hawaiian leis as their craft and on Friday they will be dressed up for their Hawaiian dance competition.

A reminder that tomorrow is our Pancake Brunch starting at 10am inside Heritage Hall. This is a fundraiser for Nationals.

Cookie Dough Class a huge hit & Fun Day Planned

Hi everyone:
Today Brian Dugie handed me two new plaques that will be placed inside Heritage Hall. The plaques show just how GREAT the Atom’s are doing this year. Special thanks to the Atom coaches, Brian Dugie, Ciara Jerrett, Chelsey Carr-Kinnear, Matt Clahane, Chris Haley and Nathan MacKinnon and of course LA Dempster for all her hard work with the Atom paddlers.

Maskwa placed 3rd in 2011 for the Atom Bomb for Most Overall points & 2nd place for Most Points Per Paddler.

The first Paddlers Cooking Dough Cooking Class is a huge hit. We had a cap of 20 children but have managed to fit a few extras into the program. We all can’t wait to try samples. Mark Thursday, August 11 as Maskwa FUN DAY & FUN NIGHT!

All day starting at 10am we will begin our FUN Day. Sorry A, B & C paddlers still have early morning training but otherwise there will be no paddling lessons or swim lessons taught that day. Kiddie Kayak from 12-1pm is still on.

We will divide the children into at least four groups, keeping the day camp children as one solid group. The children will create a Maskwa cheer, do a sandcastle competition, cannon ball competition off the wharf, a swim relay and some other team sport event.

We are very fortunate to have Boston Pizza once again provide the cheese and pepperoni pizza – it will be one free slice per child. The watermelon and juice packs are on Maskwa.

After lunch will be the ever popular whipped cream pie toss - it’s a loonie to purchase a pie to toss at the coaches. At the end of the day is our candy toss.

Adding something special we will be doing FREE movies for the children.

4-6pm will be the PG-rated movie for children aged 8-11 years – I’m not sure what movie yet so suggestions are always welcome.
We plan to place garbage bags over the windows inside Heritage Hall to make it very dark.

Bags of Popcorn/pop/juice and candy bags will be sold at the movies.

7-9pm: Scary movie – the teens are helping me pick this out.
Teens are welcome to bring along a friend.

Dear Maskwa Members:

This is an important message to please remind your children and teens to pick up their garbage. Maskwa is having serious litter problems this year, in particular popcorn is spilled on a regular occurrence on the decks and it is attracting critters at night and pop cans are being left everywhere. Please place refundable bottles in the blue bins. We are also having issues with things being left behind daily – towels, shirts and lifebelts and buns and on Friday at 4pm all things left behind in the lost and found bin will be emptied into the dumpster.

A special thanks to all the parents who made or donated food items for the officials this past weekend. The officials loved it all. I do have a number of bowls, serving trays etc still needing to be picked up. They are currently in the front foyer to Heritage Hall but will soon be moved to the technical room.

The Atom racing shirts are in. The price is $45 (tax include).

This brings me to one final but important point. A number of parents have been wondering about “C” High Performance group for paddling. If your son or daughter is interested in joining a C group please email Chad Brooks, our Head Paddling Director to discuss (chadbrooks@gmail.com) as we are currently creating a list so we can create a C group. There is an extra cost for the HP group and it’s $75/per month during the summer. The C group would be meeting early in the morning – time has not been determined.

It was a busy two days at Maskwa this past weekend with two tremendously exciting and successful regattas - the Peewee regatta on Saturday and the Bantam regatta on Sunday – in total about 1,100 people were here at the club over the two-day span.

The kids had a terrific time and Maskwa is certainly looking like a serious contender for top spot at this year's Peewee Bantam Champs with an impressive number of top five finishes. A shout out to Chris Haley who coxed our new War Canoe to Bantam mixed victory in its inaugural race.

I would like to say a very special 'Thank you' to all the volunteers who made it possible to host the regattas this year. Maskwa is a volunteer run, not-for-profit athletic club and relies on its members to support the activities of the children involved in our many paddling and swimming programs.

Thanks so much to Mike Haley who helped out in the parking lot and then pulled double-duty flipping burgers at the BBQ. Jody Pace was terrifically helpful in the parking lot, as was Geoff Morse and Bruce Piercey. Sean Gibson pulled two long shifts both days in the parking lot as well. And he deserves danger pay for dealing with a couple of unruly parkers!

Rick Davis, Connie Wright, Keith Billard, Perry and Mary Boudreau, Sally Campbell, Janet Steele, Tracy MacKay, Denis Chasse, Scott Conrad, and Peter Hope, helped raise more than $1,000 for Maskwa at the regattas by running the BBQ while Jesse Scott and Nathan MacKinnon helped out by selling 50/50 tickets. We raised $83 for Nationals.

A heartfelt thanks to 'The Man with The Golden Larynx' - John Moore - who's dulcet tones provided race results and commentary and who played at DJ both days as well. Renee Field did a terrific job supervising the regatta and keeping everything moving. Special thanks to our Custodian, Alex Hope for keeping the place so clean – especially the washrooms.

A special thanks to all the officials and coaches. Without your help there would be no regattas. We are very grateful to all the parents who volunteered their time to help as well as the parents who donated food and drink for the officials and for sale at the BBQ. Your help was massively important to the overall success of the regattas.

The food from the canteen was very well received and a shout out to Jennifer Spalding from Sweet and Savory Catering Limited for all the hard word and iced coffees on Sunday.

And, of course, a tremendous vote of thanks to the ubiquitous Gord MacLeod who supervised parking, set up all the signage, fixed broken faucets, and generally made sure that everything worked well throughout both days.

Maskwa is run by a Board of volunteer members who meet regularly throughout the year. A new Board of Directors is elected each fall.
Our club depends on the work of many volunteers and we welcome any member to join in. We are currently seeking new members to support the Board by providing help and direction for Maskwa’s paddling programs and for helping coordinate the various volunteer activities that are critical to the success of Maskwa. If you think you would be interested in helping out in either of these roles (or in any other

Spryfield Boys and Girls Club Enjoying Maskwa

Yesterday Maskwa hosted for the first time the Spryfield Boys and Girls Club at the club and we had close to 20 children aged (8-12 years) participate in our new Dragon Boat & Recreational Swim program. This program came about thanks to the generous financial support of West Bedford Holdings Limited ( a joint venture of Clayton Developments and Cresco). It was a cold, windy day but the children had lots of fun and are looking forward to returning next week. Spryfield Boys and Girls Club will be coming regularly to Maskwa on Thursdays from 2pm-4pm. The children will experience the Dragon Boat, under Chris Haley’s coaching from 2-3pm and then enjoy swimming in our supervised beach area from 3-4pm.

On Friday, August 5 from 2-4pm the Sackville Boys and Girls Club will have the chance to experience Maskwa’s Dragon Boat and Recreational Swim program. We are hopeful that we can offer more programs to introduce children all over the municipality to the joys of paddling.

A reminder this coming weekend we are hosting two regattas - Peewee on Saturday and Bantam on Sunday at the club. Lifebelts are in and singlets are required for racing. I am hoping to have the Atom racing shirts in next week before the first Atom regatta at Sack-a-wa next Saturday in Lower Sackville.

The day camp children have been having a great time this week and I'm going over shortly to take pictures of their dyed shirts! The kids loved the craft and are enjoying boating twice a day and the hikes are wearing them out - in a good way.

Maskwa Update - Great Time for Day Campers

Hi everyone:
Today is our first day of rain but that has not deterred us Maskwa paddlers or swimmers. I've got about 50 children keen for paddling and swimming lessons and they all love the rain. This is a reminder that all programs are open in the rain. We only pull the children off water if their is lightning.

Last week I had a chance to pop in a lot to see how things were going with our new Adventure Recreational Day Camp. It seemed to me, and the children that I asked that they were having lots of fun. The children are paddling either in the dragon boat or small boats in the mornings and then switching it up in the afternoon. Last week the theme of the week was Super Hero and they spent the week getting ready by decorating their caps. On Friday (with our unusual raccoon spoiling our water fun) that didn't stop the children in the camps from claiming the beach. They held a sand castle contest and trust me, being the judge was hard. I've posted a few pic so you can see what fun they are having. This week's theme is "light bright" and on Thursday they will be dying t-shirts. This morning I walked into the dark room (they have black garbage bags over the windows and all the kids are wearing glow in the dark stuff).

There are still camp spots open in August. Session 5, 6, 8 and 9 still have spots.

This coming Saturday and Sunday Maskwa is hosting two regattas. I am still in need of volunteers to help with parking and the BBQ on Saturday and Sunday. If you can only commit to one day that would be greatly appreciated. I am also hoping more parents will volunteer to bring pop/juice for the BBQ and we still are looking for cookies or muffins for the 25 officials for both days. Maskwa Starts Next Week - Swim Schedule/Paddling Schedule

Lots going on as usual.

Two things I'm hoping someone might be able to donate to the club - a whipper snipper and clippers. We really could use these so our custodian can keep the area clean and trim back the bushes.

This year the parents on the beach will be happy with the two new canopies - we really felt these were needed to help offer parents/kids more shade. Thanks so much to Gordon MacLeod for taking care of this.

Next week all paddling and swimming classes start on Monday. I have posted the new updated swim schedule and paddling schedule in this blog. It will also be posted at the beach on the old club house. One thing I would like to remind parents is to watch how you park your vehicles. Please make sure when you park in the first parking lot that there is enough room on both sides for cars from the back to get out. Please also feel free to encourage your children to bike - we do have bike racks located in the 2nd parking lot.

Also new this year are lockers in both the male/female washrooms. These are small lockers and free to use. No wet clothing and no food. Please provide your own lock. I suggest for those kids not willing to part with their cell phones/I-pods to bring a plastic bag and put those electronics in that first and then lock them up while you are either paddling or swimming. Or better yet leave them at home - there is a phone inside the club house for all to use for free.

The gym is to be used only by our High Performance paddlers or 18+ members. All members wishing to use the gym please see me for a gym waiver.

Maskwa Orientation Night

Hi everyone:
Orientation Night is Monday, June 27 from 6pm-8pm at the club. This is a great time to pop in and get your membership packages. We will also be selling paddling kits (buns, lifebelts, singlets) and other great Maskwa gear. It's also a chance to meet your coaches and ask questions about paddling and swimming.

Our season officially starts on July 4th for everyone! Yes, there is no staggered paddling this year so please come on Monday, July4th and please also be patient with us as we all get completely organized.

Right around the corner are 2 big regattas this year hosted at Maskwa. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 16 for the Peewee Regatta and Sunday, July 17 for the Bantam Regatta. This means I desperately will need volunteers to help with parking, directing people where to go and to man our BBQs for both days plus we will need safety boat people. And on that note regarding safety boats - Next Wednesday, June 29th the ADCKC will be hosting a course for those wishing to obtain their safety boat operator’s license. Update and CrossFit at Maskwa

Hi everyone:
Talk about a beautiful day. Enjoy the sun while you can. I wanted to give everyone an update. Membership cards are ready for most. The people who registered this week will get cards by end of next week. I have packages in my office with your tax receipts and Maskwa information. Please drop in - I will be in most days from 9am-2pm but please call ahead to make sure I'm in and not running errands. My number is 443-0178 ext: 221.

I think this is the year our Dragon Boat program will take off. I had lots of calls from people who tried it out on Wednesday night, and they liked it so much they are planning to join the club - that's great. Thanks so much to Chris Haley for organizing this program.

Many of you might be wondering who those people are running through the trails and doing weights in our gym. I'm thrilled to announce that we have Tannaya Hantelman running her CrossFit program out of Maskwa. Tannaya will be offering a 20% discount to Maskwa members interested in her programming at Maskwa. She's also kindly offered to take on 45-min course for my day campers this year, which will be optional for parents as it's an additional cost of $10/per class, but the goal is to get kids interested in workouts. Below is more information on her programs.

Saturday was a great Maskwa Day!

Saturday at Maskwa was jammed pack with lots of things happening. First we started off with our work party to move the docks, rake the sand, and generally get the grounds ready for our fast-approaching season. A huge thanks to all who came out to help. A special thanks to Bob Pickrem of Rapco Services Limited, whose company graciously donated their time and equipment to move our docks! A major thanks Bob as this means a lot to the club.

Then at 6:30pm that same day we launched our brand new War Canoe. She is a beauty. I love that for all boats we get to refer to them as “she” because really we women rule the water as my father would say – he was a fisherman for years so some of those expressions have become ingrained in me. Special thanks to again to Mike Haley who at the beginning of August 2010 with only 4 weeks left in our paddling season offered to spearhead a campaign to raise $25,000. Shows you the power of great leadership and lots of Maskwa commitment. To the HRM councillors who came, Peter Lund and Mary Wile, thanks so much for helping us christian the War Canoe and special thanks to all the councillors for your very much appreciated donations.

At 7pm our Wine Tasting Fundraiser kick started our Maskwa season off. We had over 70people attend the event and Harvest Wines were a huge hit! I just have to write here that I tried the red Heavyweight wine and honestly when I drop into Harvest Wine’s I’m buying a bottle for myself. It was great seeing everyone turn out for this event. We raised over $3,000 with the Credit Union matching contribution. As part of the night the Credit Union’s Kearney Lake Branch Manager Annette Shumey awarded the first Maskwa athletic scholarship valued at $1,000 to Jessie Scott, who was the lucky and hard-working recipient. I just know that next year lots more paddlers will be applying for those scholarships and the $1,000 Credit Union community scholarship.

We had to reschedule our Clean up Work Party for next Saturday starting at 9am. The boom truck couldn't make it for tomorrow so we thought we'd try to do everything for next Saturday.

We will need at least 8 people to help load the trucks into the water.
We need help sanding/painting the playground
We need help raking the lawns/sand etc.
Please bring rakes and shovels.

Update and Congrats to Mark De Jonge on World Cup Medal

A quick update. I won't be in the office tonight as originally planned but I will be back in the office on Friday 9am-2pm and Saturday 10am probably until 2pm.

Saturday is our work party which starts at 9am. Please come and help us get things ready for the upcoming Maskwa season. Bring rake and shovels if you have them as we will be spreading sand once the docks get placed in the water. I'm looking forward to seeing the playground again.

I also wanted to shout out a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Mark De Jonge and Richard Dalton.

On the weekend, Mark De Jonge captured a World Cup Bronze medal - this is his first world medal and hopefully the beginning of many more. Mark won the bronze medal in the men's K-1 200, which was one of nine medals for Canada.

Also Richard Dalton was in the men's C-1 200 relay team and they placed third.

As John Moore, our previous Commodore pointed out, Mark and Richard got their start at Maskwa so it's quite a tribute to the club to see an athlete go this far.

Regan appointed Liberal Critic for Industry and Consumer Affairs

Maskwa Update -Work Party this Saturday

Talk about beautiful! What a change from the lightning that was happening here at the club yesterday. I had to open my office window for the first time in 2011 and when I got out of my car this morning I was greeted by a symphony of bird songs. Got me thinking I should really set up a few bird feeders so I can watch the birds.

I wanted to give everyone an update. This week I will be in the office from 9am-2pm except on Thursday I'm off-site for a meeting but I should be back in around 11am. I will also be at the club tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30pm-9pm and Thursday night 6:30pm-9pm.

A reminder this weekend is our Work Crew Party on Saturday starting at 9am. We really do need help getting things in order. I will be popping in around 10am to get the coffee brewing for all and some yummy treats might be on hand.

Wine Tasting Fundraiser - Needs Your Support

Maskwa is holding an upcoming Wine Tasting Fundraiser and we need your support. Ticket sales are slow so I'm hoping the Maskwa community will rally around this event. The club has the chance to receive $2,300 in matched funds from our major sponsor, the Credit Union. I am in the office next week from 9am-2pm and you can purchase your tickets directly from me - cheque is preferred as I don't have cash in my office. Thanks so much for your support.

Maskwa Aquatic Club, overlooking beautiful Kearney Lake, will be holding a Wine Tasting Fundraiser on Saturday, June 11th from 7-9pm.

Treat yourself to a fabulous evening, our first social event of the paddling season; taste a great selection of international wines and a few beer. Come early since the launch of Maskwa’s new war canoe and C4 will take place at Maskwa at 6:30 the same evening.

Tickets are $30 each.

Wine sales: Naturally, people will be able to purchase the excellent wines being tasted throughout the evening (note: pick up of all wine will be at Harvest Wines next to Clearwater). That said, Harvest Wines has created a special case for us with selections from around the World. A case of reds, whites of mixed (6 &6) is $149. For each case sold, Harvest is donating $25 to Maskwa.

Maskwa updates and Racing Canoe Donation

I wanted to say a special congratulation to Robin Kendall for placing 3rd overall in the 10km Bluenose Marathon - way to go Robin. To all the other Maskwa members who participated, great job!

I also wanted to say a special thanks to Bill Ingarfield, who owns Enfield Pharmacy for his recent donation of a 1-seat racing canoe to the club. Bill paddled for years as a teen with the club and rejoined us back in 1977. The donation is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much Bill.

Hello Maskwa Members,

My name is Chris Haley. For those of you who do not know me I am a current athlete and coach at Maskwa Aquatic Club. I’m emailing in regards to an expanded Dragon Boat program being introduced this year. Last year we saw very little use of our Dragon Boat. This new program will provide paddlers of all levels the opportunity to participate in a fun activity that incorporates physical fitness in a social gathering type atmosphere.

Paddlers young or old, members or non-members, competitive or recreational are all welcome to enjoy this Maskwa Dragon Boat program. The program will run for 10 weeks commencing on Wednesday June 15th at 7pm. We are planning now to run 2 sessions a week (Wednesdays 7-8pm and Sundays 10-11 am) based upon the interest in this program. We are charging $7 per individual session or $50 for 10 sessions.

Maskwa will also be participating in the Manulife Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday July 9th this year. We have a team registered but we still need paddlers for the boat and to help get donations. It costs $1,250 to register a boat and we would like to raise approximately $175/paddler (20 paddlers). This is a great fundraiser for Maskwa as up to 75% of what is raised will be reimbursed back into the club. Tax receipts are issued for any donations over $20. This is a great opportunity for Maskwa to raise some money as it is the only tax receipted event this year! Contact me or Renee Field at manager.maskwa@gmail.com for more information.

Dragon Boating is an excellent way to stay in shape, meet some new people, and have fun! If you are interested in participating in this program it would be greatly appreciated if you could reply to this email expressing your interest. Maskwa Recreational Day Camp Update

Okay wow. I'm amazed at the number of people registered and thrilled. I wanted to remind people to please read the instructions carefully and then fill out the on-line form.

Here is this weeks update:
My Adventure Recreational Day Camps are filling up quickly. Again a reminder only once I receive payment is your child guaranteed a spot.

For week 1: July 4-8 - I have 13 confirmed spots so there are 17 spots still open.

For week 2: July 11-15 - I have one spot left. 29 spots have been paid for. If you are hoping to get your child into this week I would suggest you drop a cheque down today or tomorrow to ensure they can get into this week.

Week 3 - July 18-22 - I have 19 confirmed spots so there are 11 spots left.

Week 4: July 25-29 - There are 15 confirmed spots taken so 15 more available.

Most of August has about 9 spots confirmed per week so there are currently more spaces in those camps.

Also I know lots of you have questions and emails you keep sending me so please don't worry about it. I'd rather answer all your questions to ensure you are putting in the correct information.

Feel free to pop down this Saturday for our Maskwa Open House from 9am-2pm. We can process your registration at that time as we will have a number of computer stations set up. To ensure a fast delivery I highly recommend you input your information by registering on-line first. Once your information is in the system we can look up your application, please write this number down as it is needed.

A reminder we can only take cash or cheque.

I will be sending out Maskwa information to all regular maskwa members by the end of May for those that have paid. At that time you will receive your guest passes (which are only given out for Family Memberships/Maskwa ID, tax receipts).

Okay folks lots of paddling scheduling questions have come up with registration so I'm going to post the 2011 Paddling Schedule and post the age group your child will be once you register. I do not have the swimming schedule and probably won't have that until closer to when we open for the season.

Also this is a reminder for those registering in our Adventure Recreational Day Camp program do not get worry about the number of people registered you might see listed on the registration page. Maskwa Registration is Up and Working

We are officially up and running again with our new on-line registration system. Please go to the website at www.maskwa.ca and click on the registration link. Please also take the time to read the instructions. You are only guaranteed a spot once I receive payment. I know the programs list how many people are "listed as registered" on the side especially for the Kiddie Kayak and Recreational Adventure Day Camps - that is actually not the case. Only once I receive the payment is a person in the camp. We take cash or cheque (no post-dated cheques, please).

I will be in the office most days from 9am-1pm. Please call ahead at 443-0178 ext: 221 to make sure I'm on site.

Also, Saturday, May 14 from 9am-2pm is our Open House. Hope to see many of you then.

Georgeous Day at Maskwa

What a lovely day. I pulled up to Maskwa after a great meeting with John Moore and Brian Toole this morning - two guys who can work their magic at getting much needed funds for the Club - and was swarmed with loving adorable dogs! Yes, the crew of ladies from my children's elementary school, Ecole Rockingham Elementary School, were all finishing up their morning walk. It had me wishing I could join them. I tried to entice them to pop into the club for coffee but with wet dogs waiting I got the picture that wasn't going to work.

Then I got into the office to a (let's just say a lot of phone messages and emails) regarding registration. I would ask for patience here. This is a new on-line system and we're still working out the glitches, so that being said, we took it down until we get them straightened out. Hopefully it will be up by next week.

I want to apologize to Janice MacKinnon, because I mentioned in the last blog that Wendy Haley was my garden lady - wrong. It's Janice. So sorry Janice, let's just say life has been busy for me lately. Without Janice we wouldn't have any flower beds and I can't wait to see more green spread across them.

I've attached a recent photo of Natalie and Ian Miller on Kearney Lake and according to John Moore the Masters were already on the water. I think they are crazy!

Registration Soon and Judo at Maskwa

It’s another rainy day and honestly, I’m not complaining. Rain is a hundred times better than snow. I’m so happy to see the beginning of green grass and fingers crossed the flower beds that Wendy Haley planted last summer will peek through. I should point out that last week when I popped down around suppertime a deer was eating something in the flower bed but it took off before my van got close.

I am getting lots of email and calls concerning registration and would ask you to check back at our website this week. Our goal is to have it go on-line this week and again a huge thank you to Ian Wood who has worked tirelessly to get our new system created and working. You will still have to pay by cheque or cash but trust me the new on-line system makes registering much more user friendly.

Many of you already know that the ATC Judo club is now calling Maskwa’s gym home, but I wanted to share a call this morning I had from a parent. Her son is participating in the Judo club and after checking out our facility he is very keen to try his hand at paddling. This is exactly what we were hoping for – crossover when sport groups work together. On that note, I had asked Sean Goulding with ATC Judo what they offer. Below is the list of programs.

The ATC programs are primarily based on age.
Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30pm-7:30pm = Children aged 5-8 years with lots of fun games and basic Judo

Mondays and Wednesday 7:30pm-9pm = Seniors and Competitive U17+ Judo

Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30pm-7:30pm = Juniors 9-14 years for Judo

Kick Boxing Tuesday/Friday at 5:30pm

Self Defense – Half day and full-day courses offered throughout the year and by request. Private lessons available as well.

Okay, have to say I’m totally eyeing the Kick Boxing, now if only I can get rid of some of my children’s evening sport lessons so I myself can enjoy myself. Maybe once the summer hits I will have more evening time for myself (okay, I’m laughing as I write this, but that’s the joy of children, right).

Welcome - Donations for Creation of Grassy Area for Children

Okay I might be dreaming here but wouldn't it be great to create a grassy area for the children where they could rest with the shade of the trees or play a game of friendly soccer? I know the perfect location. Next to our second parking lot. The only problem is I don't have $3,800 - yup that's how much it costs for 10 loads of soil, 6inches deep to cover 835 sq.yd.

Once again I'm learning something - dirt is expensive.

I know this area would be a bonus to the children. I also know Chad, our Head Paddling Coach, thought it would also be a great place for children in-between their paddling sessions. I figure if we get the soil (tackle that first) then we get the Maskwa volunteer power to level the area and spread the soil. Next step - sods.

So, I got thinking who supplies sods - Farmer Clem's. I called Farmer Clem's head office and guess what? The President, Mr. Blois picked up his line. I should tell you here I gave a quick pitch - more like a plea for help. He has asked for more information. I fired off a letter outlining the need for a grassy area and how any help would be appreciated. I figure nothing ventured nothing gained. Now, I'm asking for all of you out there to send positive vibes our way.

Last summer with lots of fund-raising we managed to supply the children with a new-to-us playground. They love it.

This summer, I'm hoping we provide them with more grassy space.

1st Maskwa Athletic Scholarship Created with Heritage Credit Union

Okay, I have to say I am very excited about the creation of the first Maskwa Athletic Scholarship Program. When I was hired as the Club Manager, my own personal goal was to develop a way to give added value to our high performance paddlers. The first thing I had hoped to create with one of our key sponsors was a Scholarship Program. Why you might ask? Well, what better way to say to our athletes that we value their time and commitment to the club, and the sport of competitive paddling than through the creation of a scholarship program to help lighten the financial burden when they move on to post-secondary. Many of our high performance athletes are not able to work part-time during the school year because of their training schedule and we understand that.

When I had my first meeting with Trudy Wells, Manager of Marketing, Ken Shea, President and CEO of Heritage Credit Union (HCU) and Annette Shumey, currently promoted to Branch Manager for HCU they were all receptive to the idea of the creation of a specific scholarship for our Maskwa athletes. It took a while for us to work out the fine details but I’m pleased to report that Heritage Credit Union is Maskwa’s Platinum Sponsor and that they have offered a $1,000 scholarship to a Maskwa athlete for 2011. The deadline for application has been extended this year to May 1, 2011. Please see the information below for specifics on this program.

The Maskwa Athletic Scholarship will be based on the following criteria:

To be eligible for the Maskwa Athletic Scholarship, you must:
1. Be a current member of Maskwa Aquatic Club
2. Be enrolled in Maskwa’s High Performance Paddling program.
3. Be a member or the child, or grandchild of a member of Heritage Credit Union.
4. Be enrolled full-time for your first year at an accredited vocational program,

Wanting Your Maskwa Stories/Open House etc

Spring is definitely in the air! I know it was -7 this morning but with the hot sun streaming through my office window, and the fact I can now see the basketball court once again, I’ve got an extra spring in my step today.

I have had lots of inquiries about membership rates/programs and our Recreational Day Camp program already. We are currently working on having our rates up for the first week of April with a new on-line registration process. You will still have to pay by either cash or cheque but the on-line system will make it easier to calculate your 2011 fees. We have kept the Family Plus cap so for families with two or more children looking to register at Maskwa and take part in both swimming and paddling this will probably be the most affordable rate for you. The great thing about our new system is that it will calculate your actual costs of programming and then advise you what your best option for membership should be. I have to say again a huge shout out to Ian Wood, a volunteer, who has done a tremendous job putting our new system together. It’s much more user friendly.

What I’m working on now is an 8-page tabloid spread which will be inserted in The Herald for hopefully the second week of April for the Clayton Park/Rockingham/Kingswood and Bedford South areas. This insert will highlight Maskwa, our sponsors and our success stories. That being said, I’d like to hear from you.

Send me in your stories about Maskwa. What you enjoy about the club or any pics you’d like included (send as jpeg or tiff file). I know a lot of people today who are parents came to Maskwa when they were kids – so I’m asking for you to tell me what it was like. Old and new stories are great. The Maskwa Aquatic Club, located on Kearney Lake in Halifax is currently seeking coaches for the 2011 summer paddling season. All coaches will need to have their Pleasure Craft Operators Card and the ELCC course completed before their employment. Experience is an asset but not required.

Gift for Maskwa

What a wonderful way to begin my Maskwa morning. I was unloading books my girlfriend donated to Maskwa when up pulls a van I can't place. Turns out it was Trudy Needler, a member of our board, with a great gift for Maskwa the children/teens will love. It's a brand new fooseball table. It looks amazing. For now, I'm going to keep it in its box until the summer season begins because I have a few rentals who have asked for us to remove all the items in Heritage Hall. I can't wait for the children to see this. For those rainy days, we now have an air hockey table, ping-pong and a brand new soccer fooseball table. I will have to think about how we're going to configure Heritage Hall in the summer but I'm sure we can do it.

This morning I also realized only four more months to go until our new 2011 paddling/swimming season! I can't wait. This is the time of year I start to really hate the cold and looking out my office window at banks of snow does not help. Four months is not long. In that time frame I will be working on our 2nd Maskwa Newsletter, a new Maskwa 2011 flyer, a new rental brochure and of course getting my head wrapped around any new programs.

Okay, I might be dreaming here but I'd love to see a Saturday Maskwa market take place at the club for people looking to get homemade bread, vegetables and fruit and much more.

I have to add that behind the scenes, with the help of Ian Wood, who has been working long volunteer hours to put together our new on-line registration process, I feel confident that this year's registration system will be much more user-friendly. We are in the testing phase at the moment but our goal is to have it up by the first of April. I'm already averaging ten inquiries a week about our summer program and recreational day camp program so that's a good thing.

The road way and 2nd parking lot is icy once again but I've got a small order of gravel coming to be spread later today so the soccer children hopefully won't be slipping and sliding down the driveway.

Active Area Resident and Former Commodore of Maskwa Dies Suddenly

Tom Willdey, LCDR, CD, RCN (Ret’d), a long-time resident of the Rockingham area passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this past Saturday. He was active in our community, and a great parishioner at St. Benedict Parish, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Very community, Tom also served as past president of both Maskwa Aquatic Club and Rockingham Heritage Society. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Ronald MacDonald House, which was a charity close to his heart. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5449. Tom was a man who firmly believed “ask not what you can do for me, but what I can do for you.”

His sudden passing is especially, hard on his loving wife of 43 years, Juliana Belle Willdey (Turnbull), and he will be deeply missed by his children, Karla (David), Katherine (John), and Brian (Stephanie).

Visitations are 2-4pm, 6-8pm Wednesday, February 23 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Thursday, Feb. 24 in Saint Benedict Parish, 45 Radcliffe Drive.

Donations in Tom’s memory can be made to the Ronald MacDonald House, 1133 Tower Road, Halifax or a charity of your choice.

Outdoor rink on Kearney Lake - sort of now covered in snow

It's a blistering, wintery day here at Maskwa this morning. I have to say that yesterday I enjoyed watching Sarah Kendall with her children, Robin and Stephanie and I think another friend tagged along, as they shoveled off a part of Kearney Lake for skating. I'm sure Ben wished he could have been there but alas he's enjoying the hot weather of Florida for his paddling training - and we wish him and all the paddlers the best. I meant to yell out to Sarah to pop in for some hot chocolate but found my head buried in grant applications. Sarah do bang on the door next time and I promise hot chocolate for you and the crew - I always keep some on hand in the canteen. I should also let Sarah know that the snow has almost reclaimed all her hard work. It is unbelievably windy up here but hopefully later in the week we'll get rain to wash away the fine powder of snow on the make-shift outdoor skating rink.

It was nice to see our new paddling coach, Jordan, he's actually not so new anymore as he's been with us since September, but this morning he was giving Brian Dugie a work out. Dan popped in to say hi which was nice - can you tell I don't get many visitors -lol.

Icy Roads into Maskwa - Please Drive Slow

Hi everyone:
I wanted to warn everyone to please go slow when you are heading up to the club. The driveway and pathway into the club are sheets of ice. When I was there last night we actually had to help a coach get his car back onto the road. I called Kempton, our snow removal person who lives on Saskatoon Drive, and he's going to get a load of gravel to spread around today for the second parking lot and driveway into the club. I also noticed that with the high amount of snow in a short amount of time the garbage can by the trails got buried so if you plan to walk please don't litter.

I've set up the Maskwa track suits assorted by sizes inside Heritage Hall for those who want to try both the jackets and pants on. I plan to place an order by Friday,18. I'm really excited about these track suits and can't wait for my own. Since I'm working mostly from home this week - thanks to my water heater bursting and flooding my basement - please feel free to call my cell at 495-0212 if you would like to arrange a time to pop into the club to see the track suits and try them on. I will admit my best times are mornings but I can also do a few evenings.

I am also very happy to write that very soon we will come out with a formal announcement of the relationship Maskwa has forged with our Platinum sponsor.

Four Things to Highlight on Monday: Coyote spotted/Maskwa Auction/Donation/Track Suits

Hi everyone:
There are four things I would like to highlight on this sunny Monday morning - this is the calm before the big snow storm which my kids are already cheering on. I am not!

Coyote Spotted near Maskwa:
I wanted to let everyone know that on Sunday morning around 5:10am a coyote was spotted in a neighbours driveway on Saskatoon Drive. This is very close to Maskwa so please use caution. I know a number of people in the area like to walk their dogs off-leash on the Maskwa trails but I would ask you to please be aware that the Department of Natural Resources is in the process of setting traps to capture these coyotes. Coyote trap for those that don't know can capture loose dogs. The coyotes in the area (including one spotted in the vicinity around Hemlock Ravine by Grosvenor Elementary School) are coming out of the woods for quick food (think your household pet here and not kidding) and they are not afraid of humans. The coyotes moving into the urban area are not like the coyotes a couple decades ago - small and kind of cute looking. These new coyotes have mixed with wolves and they are big - in many cases bigger than a German Shepard - and they are not afraid of your dog or you. I will post a sign up by the trail area this morning to let walkers know of the coyote spotting but please spread the word.

Wonderful Donation to the Club:
Also I would like to clarify a wonderful donation that Maskwa Aquatic Club received. Thanks to Cathy and Derek Day, owners of Silhouette Fitness on Parkland Drive, the club received over $30,000 worth of hydraulic weight equipment. This donation is very much appreciated by the athletes. This donation came about because one of our Maskwa members, Judi Wensel mentioned the need for weight equipment to Cathy Day and she was more than willing to donate the hydraulic weights to our club. I can't say enough how much the paddling athletes and the young hockey group who utilize our club on Sunday morning enjoy having the opportunity to use the equipment.

Cathy and Derek unfortunately are moving from Nova Scotia but I wanted to let people know that they are selling their beautiful house at 5 Lanshaw Close (it's a 4-Bdrm/4-Bath, over 4,000 sq.foot, custom-built house, R2000, has a beautiful manicured lawn, attached garage and potential for in-law suite). Maskwa Annual Auction a huge hit:
I love the Maskwa auction and have to say a huge thanks to all the parents who really put this all together. Trust me I know this is no small feat. It went very smoothly and there were a ton of silent auction items donated along with wonderful live auction items we could bid on. I walked away spending more than my budget (hubby please do not read this, but the hotel room will be worth it - think no kids for a couple of nights -lol). I wanted to say a special thanks to Jim Bardos, owner of Kokomo's in Bayers Lake, for providing the great location, wonderful food and service. According to the tally made last night the athletes raised about $4,500 from the auction to help fund their upcoming Florida training trip where many go from 3-6 weeks for intensive training. A special thanks also to the local councillors like Debbie Hum, Mary Wile,and Peter Lund who came out to support the auction and to present Maskwa with a $13,000 cheque for our new War Canoe. Thanks so much.

I have been working with MICCO promotions to secure our new Maskwa track suits and thanks to Paul Bertrand's hard work we were able to showcase the new track suits at the auction. Paul is popping by the club this morning so we will have a variety of sizes for athletes to try on, including some youth sizes. The price for a full track suits (includes pants and your name on the Maskwa jacket) is $95 tax included. Maskwa caps are also available for $13.75 (including tax). It has been reported to the school that early this morning there was a
coyote sighting by the heart shaped pond and on the path between the
pond and the school of Ecole Grosvenor-Wentworth Park School.
Please advise your children to use the sidewalks
and stay out of the woods when walking to and from school.

A public information meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, (if

Basinview Drive Community School, 273 Basinview Drive, Bedford, NS, to
discuss the following application: Case No. 16666 - Application by Cresco Holdings Ltd., for the lands of Cresco Holdings Ltd., to enter in to a development agreement for an approximately 38.5 acre site in the proposed Sub-Area 9 of Bedford West, located between Highway 102 and Kearney Lake Road in Bedford and Halifax. The proposed development would enable commercial and residential uses and proposes 318
multiple unit residential units and approximately 107,000 square feet of
commercial space.

The purpose of the meeting is to receive feedback regarding the above-noted

Maskwa February Day Camps

Okay, should I be worried that so far only 4 children are registered in my first ever Maskwa February Day Camps? My hubby will tell you I'm not sleeping at night because I keep waking up with this thought on my frontal lobe. Well, that's part of the reason, but the other part is my slipped disc in my back, which kills when I roll over in bed. But seriously, I am worried about this. I thought for sure people would be looking for a place to put their children - I know the thought of being home with my four children for two weeks is the third reason I'm waking up at night. My teenager said he'd help out but I didn't leave him much of an option...either that or no cell phone buddy. I know people tell you one should never bribe kids - I personally think those people don't have kids.

So this morning, I'm pouring over my budget for the camp, trying to think of ways to spread this word of mouth because there really is no marketing budget, with a heating pad on my back (yup). I know hate looking out my window at the cold snow, which makes my office feel even colder. So if anyone out there has a great idea how to spread the word about this camp please let me know.

I love the idea of coming to work in February with Maskwa once again filled with children. I really miss all the people and kids. Feel free to drop by. My office hours, I'm trying to keep to, are Monday-Wed from 8:30am-12noon. Visitors welcomed.

Skate the Common Marathon this weekend

I wanted to let everyone know our own Maskwa former Commodore, John Moore, is the announcer at a key Canada Games, the upcoming Skate the Common Marathon taking palce this weekend on the Canada Games Oval on the Halifax Common. How very exciting!

Skate the Common in Halifax!

Marathon Skating International, the Dartmouth Speed Skating Club, and the Halifax Regional Municipality are pleased to announce the “Skate the Common” Marathon, which will take place as a part of the community festival “Skate: A Winter Celebration on Big Ice” January 8-9, 2011 at the Canada Games Oval on the Halifax Common.

This is a Speed Skate Nova Scotia sanctioned competition. The 25K and 40K events will be included in the Marathon Skating International Points Series, with points accumulated by skaters counting towards their season standing for purposes of the Pierre Gagné Trophy. Chip timing provided by MSI Sports Timing.

Featured events

5K Big Ice Icebreaker
Never skated in a marathon before? This event will appeal to skaters of all ages, with any type of skates. If you’ve been skating at the public skates at your local arena, you can do this distance – 12½ laps of the oval. But beware; it may awaken your interest in the longer distances!

10K Hockey / Speed Skate Challenge
Are you a hockey or ringette player, figure skater or recreational skater who’s known for their skating skills? Think you can go the distance? Take on the speed skaters in this 10 kilometre event – 25 laps of the oval!

25K Big Ice Challenge
10K just a warm up for you? This one has 62½ laps of the oval, and is a good test of your endurance and skating skills. And if you’re really serious, you can do the 10K first.

40K Going the Distance
This one is for the true marathoner. Who can complete 100 laps of the oval?

February Recreational Day Camps at Maskwa

I am so excited to announce the launch of our two-week February recreational day camps during the school break, February 14-18 & February 21-25. The camps are for children in grades two through six and will operate from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday at Maskwa. Hot healthy lunches provided by Sweet and Savory Catering Limited. The ratio is maximum 30 children/per two instructors. To register and secure your spot today click on the registration link on the top of the Maskwa home page (www.maskwa.ca)

We are still working out the daily schedule of events and activities but we will be creating themed days: Pirate day, Spy Day, Geek Science Day, etc. The children will be doing one hour of yoga instruction twice a week, badminton in the dry land area of the gym and we’re going to create a Lego section in Heritage Hall, a reading area and arts and craft area for the children. The children will be going outside twice a day for walks, free play on the basketball court and volleyball courts (weather depending).

We have also booked some great and exciting programs to make the two week break special for the children. In the first week, J the Magician will be showcasing his magical talents on Thursday from 3-4pm and the children will get to take home a magical animal balloon of his creation. The following Wednesday we’ve booked the Reptile Show and they will give an educational talk about their 7 species of reptiles they will be bringing to Maskwa and yes the children will get to touch them. Mad Scientists will be dropping by for our Geek Science Day (date and time to be determined) but it’s a hands-on educational component for the children to learn about the fun of science and they will also get to take something home with them.

Maskwa Offering Two Week February Day Camps

Hi everyone:
I'm so excited. We have worked out arrangements so Maskwa can offer a two week day camp service for parents/students during the upcoming February 2011 school break.

The camp is offered for students in grades 2 through 6 and will run from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday, starting February 14-18 for week one and February 21-25 for the second week.

This has been lots of fun to organize. I have hired one main instructor who is very qualified to deal with multi-aged students. Her bio is attached to the registration form. We will also be hiring one more instructor. Our ratio is two instructors for a maximum of 30 students per week and we are providing hot healthy lunches thanks to our caterer Sweet and Savory Catering Limited.

The fun part is we are creating themed days at Maskwa. We will be having pirate days/scavenger hunts/ a magic day with The Amazing Mister J - Magician/Entertainer (www.misterj.ca), Mad Science will be popping by one week and we will be incorporating recreation-based activities like yoga, dance, badminton into our day programs.

Maskwa Silent Auction at End of Jan for Spring Training

The wind is roaring here and I'm totally amazed no trees have fallen down at Maskwa. Thank you to the big person upstairs! I wanted to give everyone a head's up that a Maskwa Silent Auction event will be taking place the end of January to help raise money for our athletes to go their February/Spring training camp in Florida.

The event will take place Sunday, Jan. 30 from 2pm-6pm at Kokomo's Restaurant in Bayer's Lake Industrial Park. The restaurant is located at the corner where the Empire Theatre is located and the Bike shop. I've been told there are lots of great auction items including a complimentary night at the Quality Inn with continental breakfast. We are always looking for more silent auction donations so if you'd like to donate something to the club please email me at manager.maskwa@gmail.com so we can arrange drop off or pick up.

Also very soon I will be launching a website to highlight registration for our Maskwa upcoming day camps during the two week school break in February. Stay tuned for signs and more information on our web but basically we're creating themed days, included will be a magic show, a visit by Mad Scientist and much more. Every day will also have a recreational base included like yoga, badminton, or dance. This is sure to be lots of fun for children in grades 2 through 6. We will take a maximum of 30 children per week and have hired two qualified child care instructors to oversee the two week camps.

As for all the other stuff I'm trying to do - let's just say I'm busy. The need for a bookshelf so I can put my growing binders up would be welcome so fingers crossed someone will donate one - lol.

AGM Tonight at 7pm at Club

I quickly wanted to remind Maskwa members that tonight is our annual general meeting starting at 7pm and it will probably last an hour or more. Drop by if you can.

Also the 1st Holiday Craft Market was a great success. We had about 60 walk through the facility and of course buy products from vendors. I am now broke-lol. I loved the variety of gifts and have to say that the bags that Prescott House created with the Maskwa logo are amazing. We might have an opportunity to sell these bags in the summer. Prescott House also made these amazing create your own Xmas bags, Xmas cards, and calendars. I took the Xmas bags and cards to my Sunday School class and the kids loved them - of course all the parents wanted to find out where I got them so I bragged about Maskwa and Prescott House.

Ideally, I would love to see something like a Farmer's Market take place in the summer. Hosting a Holiday Craft Market opened my eyes to the potential for this and all the vendors I talked to said to count them in.

Again, a huge thanks to the Maskwa members who popped in and bought gifts.

Great Paddle-a-Thon Success

Maskwa hosted its first paddle-a-thon and it was a great time had by all. Over twenty people showed up to participate and with it being Thanksgiving weekend and all, that was good. While the sun was shining the north wind was cold and lots of white caps on the water for the teenagers and younger children participating made it slow and cold. But that didn't stop them from getting on the water. Chad our head paddling coach loaded a good number of kids up into the dragon boat and off they took. They looked like young Vikings in training. By the time they were finished they were looking forward to getting their frozen hands wrapped around the hot chocolate mugs.

Thanks so much to all the volunteers (parents) who brought in fruit and veggie trays and yummy cookies and those wonderful chocolate brownies. The good news with this amazing paddle-a-thon is that we have officially reached our War Canoe goal. This would not be possible without the guidance, coordination and pep rally stewardship of Mike Haley. Thanks so much Mike for all you have done over the past six weeks (yes, in only six weeks we raised $25,000) for the Maskwa kids. For many years to come, and probably for decades because War Canoes are sturdy boats, we will be singing Mike's praises. It was no small task but necessary.

I wish I had my note book on Saturday so I'm trying to remember all the great info off the top of my head. There were three winners (pictured above). David Webster, placed 3rd for most pledges and considering he was sick as a dog the other day, he somehow managed to come and paddle. For David's efforts he received a 6-foot party sub from Subway. Nathan Haley placed 2nd received an MP3 player and bringing in about $500 in pledges the first prize went to Matthew McQuade who received an I-Pod for his great effort. All the kids did a tremendous job raising money and honestly every penny counted. This was such a great event, and for me, it was nice to see some familiar Maskwa faces again, I think we should make this a yearly Fall event for Maskwa paddlers. Don't forget we need to raise money now for a new trailer to haul our wonderful new War Canoe.
