1st Maskwa Holiday Market in November

Hi everyone:
Maskwa is going to host it's first Holiday Market on Saturday, November 20 from 10am-1pm, with the snow date being the following Saturday. We are currently looking for a minimum of 10 vendors looking to sell their goods/services. Our 6ft tables are $50 + tax/each. Tables will be booked on a first come basis keeping in mind that we will want a selection of vendors. If your organization is looking to raise money even doing a "bake sale" will be considered. We will not be charging admission to this event for the general public as we want to encourage newcomers to the club. Ads will be taken out in the community Herald and a glow promotion sign will be booked a week prior to the event and situated on Kearney Lake Road to inform the community. Please email me at manager.maskwa@gmail.com if you would like to book a table. Maskwa will take cash or cheque but no refunds will be given for no-shows and payment in full will be expected to reserve tables. Thanks so much.

Maskwa End of Year Banquet

Hi everyone:
Totally excited that I was finally able to borrow banquet tables and chairs for our end of year banquet. Have to say upfront special thanks to Jodi Pace for helping to arrange this with St. Peter's Anglican Church. If anyone would like to help us collect the tables/chairs please join us on Thursday, Sept 23 at 12:15pm at the church, corner of Kearney Lake Rd and Bedford Highway. We need pick up trucks/vans and lots of muscle power. Then of course we will be setting them up in the club house.

The evening is shaping up to be great. This year Maskwa will be providing hot tea/coffee/paper plates/serviettes, utensils and yes of course you can purchase a drink/ We're working on securing drinks for the children and there will also be buns/butter on the tables.

We ask again each family to bring a main meal, salad or dessert. I've had a few people RSVP what they are bringing but I'm hopeful more will. My email again is manager.maskwa@gmail.com.

If you have a trophy from last year please drop it off at the club. I'm in most mornings around 10:30am or call me at 443-0178 ext: 221 to arrange a time.

End of Year Banquet Info

Hi everyone:
It's a beautiful day where are you all? Just kidding. Back to school and back into the work routine makes it very quiet at Maskwa, but it also gives me time to plan for our upcoming end of year Maskwa Banquet. This event is a lot of fun and a large part of that fun is tapping into that Maskwa family spirit. The event is Thursday, Sept 23 starting at 6:30pm and it's being held at Maskwa. And yes I know it's Rockingham Elementary School's curriculum night but since all that info is on the HRSB website and available from the teachers, I figure I can miss that without feeling guilty and attend the end of year banquet.

Anyway, I am counting on people's support. As in past years we are asking all families to bring either a hot dish like a cooked ham, chicken, casserole, salad or dessert. Please keep in mine if you are a large family, like my own with six in total, making two dishes would be greatly appreciated. In my case I normally cook up a ham and bring along a large salad, and a dozen rolls, just because I always worry there might not be enough food for all. We also need people to bring buns, bread, etc.

As in past years we're asking for you all to bring your own dishes, cutlery, napkins and drinks. I'm working on the liquor license so that will be a nice treat.

I am hoping people will read this and fire off an email to me to RSVP and let me know what they are bringing. Please email me at manager.maskwa@gmail.com. It's very exciting that we're hosting our first end of year banquet at our new club.

Maskwa update from John Moore, the Commodore

Greetings Everyone,

Maskwa was a happening place today. It started around 3 pm and people kept coming. It was a beautiful day in, out and on the water. It' s wonderful to see so many members and their guests still enjoying Maskwa. The weather this week has been a phenom to say the least. Kearney Lake has actually felt a bit like a Jacuzzi these past few days.

This coming weekend we have a weather event called Earle passing through. Please take every precaution to be ready. We will be doing our best to ensure everything is secure at Maskwa.

This past week Sean O'Connor and myself gave tours to the Minister of Finance, Graham Steele and Ooficials from ACOA. They were extremely impressed with both our operation and our buildings. The officials from ACOA couldn't believe we built all this for just 1.2 million. Imagine what we could do if we received 10 times the $355,000 they gave us. There's no stopping us now, is all I can say. You ain't seen nothing yet….Think big….Imagine what 6 tennis courts would be like adjacent to our big parking lot next to the trails entrance….or what a wheelchair accessible trail would look like all the way down to PopCorn Island and around the loop…or a series of work out stations all the way back to Charlie's Lake……or brand new boats to meet all our paddlers needs .

The war canoe fundraising campaign is now at $6600 which is amazing given we only began less than 2 weeks ago. Please do what you can to help Mike Haley and his team achive their goal of $25,000.Check our website for updates and follow the progress of the fundometer. All ideas are welcome

I’m happy to announce Renee Field will be taking over as our new Registrar. This will be a gradual process and will make us much more professional as an organization. It also means a harrowing and difficult volunteer position has just been eliminated which is great news for future volunteers.Thank you to the Munroe-Capes for enduring what surely was the toughest volunteer job at Maskwa. You are to be commended for sticking with this for 4 years.

The Closing Celebration Banquet is being held in the Aquatic Room of our facility on September 23 starting at 6:30pm. An email will be going out shortly asking for your donated pot luck items. You will be getting more details in the coming weeks so circle your calenders as we prepare for a BIG celebration.

Yours in Maskwa
John Moore

Making Heritage Hall Availalbe to the Community

This week I had a great meeting with Mabel MacEachern the Recreational Programmer for Northcliffe Recreational Centre. It got me thinking, as I sit here baking in my very hot so-not-airconditioned office, that we need to reach people outside the Maskwa community. That's why I'm posting this blog. If you know of anyone who might be interested in offering classes during the day at Maskwa in their trained profession please tell them to call me.

Maskwa Aquatic Club's new facility, located overlooking picturusque Kearney Lake, offers the perfect location for proffesional individuals looking to offer their services for the community. If you are trained in martial arts, are a personal trainer, teach yoga, pilates, aerobics, dance or are interested in holding specialized language classes or social classes we have the perfect set-up for your needs.

Heritage Hall is 36X32 with six large windows, three of which overlook Kearney Lake. Our gym, called the Aquatic Room, is 1,920 sq.ft 60X32 with nine large windows, six windows overlooking Kearney Lake. The club offers private access to washroom facilities, accessible doors and ramps, kitchen with stove, industrial sink, convection oven for use and free wireless and our gym is full of weight equipment.

We offer both daily and evening usage and are currently booking for our 2010-2011 season. Maskwa Aquatic Club has over 800 members, is located within the Halifax area, and has adequate parking. If you or your group would like to use our facility for instructional usage please call Renee Field, Club Manager at 443-0178 ext: 221 or email manager.maskwa@gmail.com today. Feel free to check out our club at www.maskwa.ca
